Chapter 19

Karla

Karla Kennedy wasn’t happy. Another visit from Tula Whitlow. This time demanding to see the school yearbooks. All of them, going back to 2004. And to make matters worse, the woman had brought her sisters. If either of them were upset by the videos that were circulating all over town, it sure wasn’t obvious. They both seemed just as full of themselves as ever.

After making introductions to the head librarian, Karla directed them to the back of the library where all school related volumes, including the yearbooks, were shelved.

“We’re going to need boxes,” Emmery said. “Like, right away.”

“You surely don’t think I can let you remove these from school property?” Karla asked. “We don’t even allow the students to check these out. If you’ll tell me what it is you’re looking for, maybe we can narrow it down.”

“I’d love to,” Tula answered. “But I won’t know until I see it. It’s there though, in one of those yearbooks. I’m sure of it.”

“It’ll take you forever to go through them all.” Karla said, realizing she’d probably have to relent and let them take the books. Anything was better than having them hanging around for days.

As if reading her thoughts, Emmery Whitlow smiled sweetly and said, “Well, it’s either that or we camp out here in your library for god only knows how long.”

“Hey, that might be fun,” Alafair giggled. “I can kind of see myself in here, you know. Sort of holding court. A bunch of teenagers at my feet. Lots of stuff I could teach them I’ll bet.”

Karla immediately had an image of what something like that would look like.

“Fine,” she said. “Boxes it is. Anything else while you’re making demands?”

“Well, I’d kill for a beer, but I could settle for a round of decent coffee, if you have any,” Alafair answered, lowering her body down to the floor where she proceeded to pull yearbooks from the bottom shelf, peering at the dates then tossing them aside.

“Whoa!” Tula stepped over and picked an arm full of books up off the floor. “What the heck are you doing?”

“These are the wrong date,” Alafair replied.

“No shit,” Tula said, running her fingers along the spine of one of the books. “See this? Right here on the spine? It says 1974. Very clearly. You don’t have to pull them out at all, much less sling them all over the room.”

“Of course I know that,” Alafair huffed. “I just don’t have my glasses. I have to pull them out so I can get them close enough to see the freakin’ date.”

“Alafair, you don’t wear glasses.”

“Of course I do. You just haven’t noticed.”

Karla had no idea where the conversation was headed or what it was about. Whether the girl Alafair wore glasses or didn’t. Nor did she care. But she had a feeling trying to direct these three in any sort of way would be akin to herding cats. Refereeing this nonsense would be a fool’s errand and she wasn’t going to do it.

“I have an idea,” she told the three of them.
